It is going to take quite a bit of effort on your part to properly learn all the various aspects of the Chinese language.

While learning Chinese, you're going to have to use some mental tricks so that you can associate the character to the physical item or abject concept that represents. By developing a mental image of the character and quickly associating it with its pronunciation and meaning, you will find yourself being able to build up a library of the components of each character.

While it’s important to note the growing number of Chinese companies hitting the headlines, it is China’s relevancy in various global affairs that allows for Westerners to understand the impact China is having on the world. Beijing not only successfully hosted the 2008 Olympics but has also saturated the press with their constant medal wins. Both these points are critical for the internal image of China as well as how the world views the nation.

You may also want to take a class in writing Chinese characters. This will ensure that you do them correctly and make you much more familiar with the art form. If you do that, you can then make up cue cards for yourself that you can study off of during some idle time. As you do this you will start to notice some recurring themes in the characters in your association will begin to come together. The more characters you learn, the easier it is to expand your library of characters.

Taking a class in learning Chinese calligraphy may also be something that you want to do. Each of these characters are very distinct in their features and one wrong stroke could mean an entirely different word. Taking this class you will ensure that you are doing an accurate depiction of each and every hanzi that you're trying for. When you can accurately depict all the characters, begin making yourself a set of cue cards that you can use as a study aid. Go through them during your spare time and you'll soon find that you accumulate it a large mental library of hanzi characters.
